Heartbreak for Jironi as he misses qualifying mark by just one second

By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: National middle distance runner Mohd Jironi Riduan, who is a full time coach with the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) in Johor, came close to qualifying for the Myanmar SEA Games in December.

The 27-year-old Sarawakian clocked the season’s best time of 1:51.73 in the men’s 800m in the National Closed Athletic Championships at the National Sports Council (NSC) Training Track in Bukit Jalil here yesterday.

It was a heartbreak for him as he missed the qualifying time by just one second. The qualifying time is 1:50.69, which is the silver medal mark at the 2011 Games.

M. Kesevan of Perak clocked 1:52.45 to bag the silver while the bronze went to Tan Wei Heng of Kedah who was timed at 1:55.68.

Jironi said he was just plain unlucky not to qualify for the Games.

“I had a slow start in the first 400m but I pushed myself in the last lap. However, it was not good enough to beat the qualifying mark,” said Jironi.

“It is mentally tough to coach the students and train at the same time for competitions. I don’t have a coach so I have to train on my own first before training the 15 students at SSTMI,” added Jironi, who was the runner-up in the 800m and 1,500m in the 2009 Laos SEA Games.

At the 2011 Indonesia SEA Games, Jironi finished empty handed after he was disqualified for pulling another athlete’s T-shirt in the 1,500m final.

Jironi, who clocked 1:54.00 in the Taiwan Open last month, has only one more tournament to beat the Games mark.

“The Malaysian Open in October will be my last meet to qualify for the Games,” said Jironi.
