Nurul aims to bury ghost of 2011
NURUL FAIZAH ASMA MAZLAN is among the best 400m runners in the country and her mission is to bury the ghost of 2011 when the 4x400m quartet failed to qualify for the SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia.“I think failing to beat the qualifying mark of 3:30.45 seconds was the worst moment of my career,” said the 22-year-old Nurul, who has represented Malaysia since she was 14.
“I don’t feel the pressure of running in big tournaments because I have been doing it since I was in school.”
Nurul had taken part in the 2009 SEA Games in Korat, Thailand, and helped the 4x400m team finish fourth.
“After training together for almost two years, the understanding between the senior and junior runners has been established. We have a good chance of not only qualifying, but winning a medal in the upcoming SEA Games,” said a confident Nurul.
The Terengganu-born runner set a personal best of 56.72s in the 400m at the Asean School Games in 2008 en route to winning a silver medal.
Nurul also has an impressive record at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) where she has been on the podium since 2006 in the 400m and 4x400m.
She is the defending women’s 400m champion after winning the gold medal last year in Pahang.
The 4x400m Terengganu relay team have swept the gold medal from 2006 till 2012.
“Under the guidance of coach, K.Jayabalan, Nurulassikin Mohd Rashid and I have shown good improvements over the last two years. We have to work with the other two senior runners to be able to achieve our target of competing in the SEA Games.
Nurul said that will be a very small chance of she competing in the individual event at the SEA Games even if she beats the qualifying time of 55.28s as the coach wants her to fully focus on the relay.
The two seniors runners in the relay team are Noraseela Mohd Khalid and K. Ganthimathi.
