SUKMA champion Saranraj Sivamani is on track to qualify for the SEA Games later this year.
He and teammate, Tan Wei Heng are the only middle distance runners from Bukit Jalil Sports School with the chance of qualifying as their personal best times are 1:51.21 seconds and 1:51.15s respectively. While it is more than a second outside the qualifying mark of 1.50:06s, they are ready to make up the deficit. “My aim right now is to beat the SEA Games qualifying time,” said Saranraj.

His coach A.Trapadi said: “He has the height and most importantly the desire to learn and keep improving year after year.

“Many talented people leave the school because they intend to further their studies and some get better offers from the clubs outside.

“So we failed to hold on to them but thankfully the juniors are making the right choice in staying because this is the only way they can get to the national team.”

Saranraj finished his SPM examination last and plans to do his Pre-U in BJSS and continue his passion for middle distance running under the guidance of his coaches, Trapadi and S.Indran.

“Middle distance running is not all about endurance and having the right technique, but also to have the awareness on when to plan your move and both my coaches have really improved my decision making,” said Saranraj.

The St.Thomas student joined BJSS in 2008 when he was in Form 1 and won his first gold medal in the 1,500m event at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) a year later.

He began to show more interest in the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m in 2011. After training for almost a year, Saranraj capped off an amazing final year in secondary school by winning gold medals in the 1500m and 5000m at the SUKMA last year.
