Girls Outshine Boys On Fourth Day Of Schools Meet

KANGAR: The girls outshone the boys on the fourth day of the National Schools Athletics Championships (MSSM) by breaking three records at Stadium Utama yesterday.

The boys could only crack one record.

Elena Goh Ling Yin of Federal Territories got the ball rolling for the girls by clocking 25:51.82 in the 5,000m walk in the Under-18 category to clinch the first gold of the day.

Elena shattered the 10-year-old record of 26:03.27 set by Kelantan’s Wan Nurul Syima in Kota Kinabalu in 2002.

The weather continued to wreak havoc in the 54th edition of the competition as a downpour forced several events to be postponed for almost an hour. When competition resumed, the girls continued from where they left off with Nik Norzilawati Nik Wil breaking the 800m record in the Under-18 category.

The Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) fifth former clocked 2:17.30 to break K. Ganthimathi’s 2005 timing of 2:18.47.

Sarawakian Grace Wong Xiu Mei then hurled the shot putt to a new distance of 13.61m in the Under-12 category to erase her own mark of 11.96m set in Ipoh last year.

Jonathan Tinggang of Sarawak saved the boys’ the blushes by leaping to a new record of 1.96m in the Under-15 high jump. The SMK Tatau Form Three boy erased the seven-year mark of 1.95m set by Poh Yu Shen of Johor in 2005.

Meanwhile, last year’s Under-18 best male athlete Tan Wei Heng completed his double by winning the 800m in 1:57.41.

The Kedahan, who won the 1,500m on Wednesday, opted out of the 5,000m event on Thursday. He won the 800m, 1,500 and 5,000 races last year.

“I’m happy to defend my two gold medals here although my timing was a bit off from what I had planned,” said the 18-year-old Wei Heng.

“It was cold and we did not have enough time to warm up when the race resumed after the rain stopped, so I’m not too bothered about my poor timing. I opted out of the 5,000m as I was not confident of doing well.”

The boys’ Under-18 100m final, which was annulled due to a technical error on Wednesday, saw Pahang’s Mohd Amirul Mukmin Mohd Yusmiza winning in 11.03 in the re-run yesterday.

Mohd Hakim Faizi Rosli of Negri Sembilan, who finished first in the earlier race, ended up third in 11.25 while local lad Mohd Amir Syahmi Kamarudin bagged the silver in 11.23.

In the first race, there were protests over a false start. The MSSM technical committee opted for a re-run yesterday instead of disqualifying the winner.

With one more day of competition, defending champions Sarawak continued to dominate the medal tally with a haul of 15-17-7, followed by Perak with 10-12-7 and Sabah on 7-6-5.
