Norzilawati Gets Drenched But Still Breaks 800m Record At MSSM Meet

KANGAR: As far as Kelantan middle distance runner Nik Norzilawati Nik Wil is concerned, it must have been a shower of blessing.

For not even the rain could stop her from bagging her second gold medal in style in the National Schools Athletics Championships (MSSM) at Stadium Utama yesterday.

The Kelantan lass, all drenched after running in the heavy rain, clocked 2:17.30 in the 800m final to erase K. Ganthimathi’s 2005 mark of 2:18.47 in the girls’ Under-18 category.

Sarawak’s Faradillah Raznie was second in 2:22.12 and S. Sharmila of Johor was third in 2:24.96.

Norzilawati, 18, who also won the 1,500m gold medal, has thus repeated the double she achieved in Ipoh last year.

“I was all fired up for the race after failing to break the 1,500m record. I’m so happy that I finally broke the 800m record,” said Kuala Krai lass Norzilawati.

“The cold morning weather was definitely a big help as the hot weather on Wednesday hampered my run in the 1,500m.

“I think I was also much more relaxed in the 800m final compared to my 1,500m race. What makes this such a great achievement is that the new record is also my personal best.”

The gold was also the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Form Five student’s sixth in the MSSM meet, having competing in the championships since 2009.

Norzilawati, who is the ninth child from 11 siblings, will now focus on her preparation for the Asean School Games (ASG) in Jakarta from June 28-July 6.

“I will return to my hometown for a week during the school break before returning to training. I want to get ready for the ASG,” she said.
