KUALA LUMPUR: National record holder Tan Song Hwa is among three hammer throwers who will be in Hungary next month for a three-week stint.
Song Hwa, who rewrote her own record with a 58.60m effort to clinch the gold medal in the Thailand Open at the Thammasat University in Bangkok last Friday, will be joined by Jackie Wong and Casier Renee Kelly Lee.
The Pahang lass, whose previous record was 57.55m, set at the Taiwan Open last May, has also made the grade for the Asian Track and Field (ATF) championships in Kobe from July 6-8, beating the qualifying mark of 56.85m.
“The decision to send Song Hwa to train in Hungary is to prepare her for the ATF as well as the SEA Games (in November),” said Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Song Hwa, who is training under Slovakian Frantisek Petrovic, is aiming to breach the 59m barrier at the ATF meet. “Besides Song Hwa, we will also send athletes like Noraseela Mohd Khalid and Roslinda Samsu for training stints in Europe,” said Shahidan.
Hurdler Noraseela and pole vaulter Roslinda will be in Germany from the end of next month for a 35-day stint.
National walkers Teoh Boon Lim, Lo Choon Sieng and Norliana Mohd Rusni will also get stints overseas. They will be in Slovakia and Ireland for a month and get to take part in competitions there in June.
Noraseela, Roslinda, Boon Lim, Choon Sieng and the women’s 4x100m relay team of Nurul Sarah Abdul Kadir, Yee Yi Ling, Siti Zubaidah Abadi and Norjannah Hafizah Jamaluddin have all qualified for the ATF meet.
Meanwhile, Mohd Hakimi Ismail claimed the triple jump bronze medal on the last day of competition yesterday at the Thailand Open.
Malaysia ended the championships with one gold and three bronze medals. The other bronze medallists were Mohd Ajmal Aiman (hurdles) and Ahmad Luth Hamizan (steeplechase).
