KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Ahmad Luth Hamizan marked his senior international debut by winning the bronze medal in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase in the four-day Thailand Open athletics championships at the Thammasat University in Bangkok yesterday.
The 19-year-old from Negri Sembilan clocked 9:53.33 – way off his personal best of 9:31:35.
Team manager S. Arunandy said in a telephone interview yesterday that they did not expect Ahmad to win a medal as the Thailand Open was his first senior international meet.
“He could have clocked a better time if not for the rain. However, we are happy that he marked his senior international debut by winning a medal,” said Arunandy.
Ahmad was delighted to mark his senior international debut with a medal.
“It is a good start to my athletics career and the bronze medal will inspire me to train harder to qualify for the Indonesia SEA Games (in November),” said Ahmad.
After two days of competition, Malaysia have won one gold and two bronze medals.
On Friday, Tan Song Hwa won the women’s hammer gold with a distance of 58.60m to rewrite her own national record while Mohd Ajmal Aiman clinched the men’s 110m hurdles bronze. No Malaysian will be in action today. Mohd Hakimi will compete in the men’s triple jump event tomorrow.
