Defending champions taken to the wire in schools annual meet

Kuala Muda-Yan (KMY) district schools athletic contingent
became overall champions for the third year running at the 54th Kedah
schools annual track & field championships which concluded yesterday
at the Darulaman Stadium.
The four-day meet saw three contingents taking turns to top the table. At the conclusion of the first day, Kubang Pasu (KP) the 2010 champions led the pack while Kota Setar (KS) the 2004 champions took over the leader board on the second day while Kuala Muda-Yan (KMY) surged into the lead for the first time on the third day and held on to run out ultimate winners by five gold margin over Kota Setar district.
KMY collected 25 gold medals, 26 silver medals and 24 bronze medals out of a total of 96 events competed while second placed Kota Setar doubled their last year’s gold medal tally by collecting 20 gold medals apart from 21 silver medals and 21 bronze medals.
The champions received a challenge trophy and cash prize of RM5,000 while runner-up Kota Setar received RM3,000 from deputy education director Roslee Ismail.
There were six meet records and one national schools record set in this year’s event.
The sportsboy accolade went to SMK Tunku Anum, Kubang Pasu athlete Muhammad Ariff Johari who broke the boys class two discus record and also added the gold medal in the javelin event.

Hammer Throw: Lim Chen Chuen (KP) 42.79m (32.70m)
Class Two
Discus : Muhammad Ariff Johari (KP) 46.63m (43.54m), 4x400m : Kuala Muda Yan 3:37.34s (3:38.12s).
Girls
Class One
Long Jump: Noor Shahidatun Nadia Mohd Zuki (KS) 5.89m (bettered MSSM record of 5.85m)
Class Two
4x400m: Kuala Muda-Yan 4:23.36s (4:23.40s), 1500m: Eng Sin Jou (KS) 5:20.13s (5:28.43s)
Class Three
4x100m: Kota Setar 54.62s (54.80s)

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Noor Shahidatun Nadia Mohd Zuki, a Bukit
Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student, was named sportsgirl of the meet for
the second year running.
She won the award for bettering the national schools class one long
jump record and winning the gold medal in the triple jump and a silver
in the 100 meters sprint.
