Shahidatul and Kirthana book tickets to world junior meet

By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Triple jumpers Noor Shahidatul Nadia and R. Kirthana qualified for the World Youth Athletics Championships in Ukraine after surpassing the qualifying mark in the FTAAA All-Comers meet at the National Sports Council training track in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Shahidatul cleared 12.81m for the gold while Kirthana bagged the silver with her 12.58 effort. Both the Bukit Jalil Sports School students beat the qualifying mark of 12.30.

The 17-year-old Shahidatul has also qualified for the long jump in the Under-17 World Youth Championships from July 10-14 after clearing 5.98m in the National Under and Over distance meet in Bukit Jalil last month. The qualifying mark is 5.90m.

Shahidatul also qualified for the championships in Barcelona last year but was forced to give it a skip as the dates of the meet clashed with the Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Kuantan.

“She sacrificed going to the World Youth Championships because her state Kedah wanted her to focus on Sukma. This time, she will definitely be going to Ukraine,” said BJSS coach Zainal Abas.

Kirthana, a Form Four student, was surprised to qualify for the World Youth Championships.

“I competed in the triple jump for the first time in the National Under and Over distance meet last month and managed to clear 11.99m. And I never expected to improve my mark in just one month,” said Kirthana.

“I am happy with my efforts. From now on, I will focus on the triple jump and hope to do well in Ukraine.”

Iskandar breaks pole vault record

By G. ARAVIND

Iskandar Alwi
Iskandar Alwi

ISKANDAR ALWI broke the national record for the pole vault at the FTKLAA All Corners Athletics Championship at the National Sports Council track in Bukit Jalil today.

The 19-year-old’s leap of 5.01m broke the national record of 5.00m that was set by his coach Teh Weng Chang in 2002.

Weng Chang set the record at a local meet in Kuala Lumpur.

This is the first competition of the year for the Bukit Jalil Sports School athlete and Iskandar knew the record was within his reach even before the competition started.

“I tried to break the record in the Thailand Open last December but I could not get beyond 4.90m. Today was my second attempt at the record and I managed to do it this time,” Iskandar said.

He cleared 4.40m and 4.60m with his first attempt. But he failed in his first attempt at 4.80m.

“It took two attempts for me to clear 4.80m before I decided to try 5.01. I failed in my first attempt but thankfully I succeeded on the second.

The Kluang-born athlete has now set his target on qualifying for the SEA Games in December.

“Qualifying is my main priority but for now I can’t be thinking of winning the gold medal because I will have to at least jump 5.30m to have a chance to be among the medal contenders.

“I’m also planning to change the length of my pole to 4.75m to enable me to attempt even higher jumps. The pole he is using now is 4.60m.

Iskandar’s switch from high jump to pole vault six years ago has paid off handsomely as he also holds the Sukma record in pole vault.

He broke the record last year with a leap of 4.80m to better the previous record of 4.71m set by Wong Teck Ho of Sarawak in Kedah in 2006.

Weng Chang, who has been coaching Iskandar for the past one and a half years, said he was happy that his athlete had broken the record.

Na’aman’s death a big loss to schools sports

By RIZAL ABDULLAH

Na’aman Mohd Shah

THE sudden death of Na’aman Mohd Shah, chairman of Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) athletics, on Friday is a big loss to the sport’s fraternity in the country.

The 56-year-old Na’aman passed away at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital at 2.45pm after developing breathing difficulties a day after returning from Port Dickson where he had attended a course.

Na’aman was attached to the Johor Education Department’s Development of Human Resources section (Sports Unit) as a special officer for excellence. He leaves behind wife Siti Aminah Mohd Salbi and five children – three boys and two daughters.

Apart from being the chairman of MSSM athletics, Na’aman was also the coordinator of schools athletes competing in Sukma (Malaysia Games) since the inception of the national games.

Until his death he was also the MSSM track and field chief coach to the Asean Schools Games since 2010. Malaysia finished runners-up in Vietnam in 2009, champions in Kuala Lumpur (2010), third in Singapore (2011) and second in Surabaya last year.

He was also the head coach of the Malaysian Schools team to the Asian Cross Country Championships in Mongolia in 2012.

He started his teaching career with Sekolah Kebangsaan Muzaffar Shah in Kota Tinggi (1977-1988). He later served several schools in Johor Bahru until 1990 and was later attached to the State Education Department’s Sports Unit (1991-1999).

After getting a promotion, he was attached to the SK Larkin 2, Johor Baru from 1999 to 2001 before being transferred to the Johor Baru District Education Department as a Senior Supervisor (Sports) for a year.
Na’aman has been with Johor Education Department’s Sports Unit since 2008 and had organised several major MSSM championships in the state, including football, volleyball, cricket and bowling apart from athletics.

This year Johor will play host to MSSM football and bowling in June and Na’aman was deeply involved with both events.

Na’aman was also on the panel of writers for the Ministry of Education’s module book on the management of sports and athletics (track and field). He was also on the panel of writers for the ministry’s module book on 1 Student 1 Sport.

Savinder looks to make big strides with shift to BJSS

By G. ARAVIND

UP AND COMING middle distance runner Savinder Kaur is hopeful that she will improve by leaps and bounds now that she is enrolled at Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

The 16-year-old former student of SMK Ideal Heights was spotted by BJSS scouts after she won the 800m with a time of 2:25:00 at the National Schools Sports Council championships (MSSM) in the Under-15 category.

“BJSS coaches A. Trapadi and S. Indran saw my performance in the MSSM where I won gold (800m) and silver (1,500m) and soon after I received the offer to join the school.

“This is my third month in the BJSS and I’m enjoying the training here because they are so many talented runners and the coaches are also very encouraging.

She added during her time in SMK Ideal Heights, she could only train for one session – in the afternoon as school started early.

“I would normally train alone which could be quite boring sometimes.

“Here in BJSS, we have two sessions and it enables us to maintain our progress as we know that we have to do better in the afternoon training than what we do in the morning,” Savinder said.

She continued her impressive form  at FTAAA MSSKL Throws, Jumps and Under Distance competition last month where she won the women’s 1,200m with a time of 4:01:26.

She also took part in the Little Athletics Championship in Singapore last year July where athletes from the home country, Malaysia and Australia competed.

Savinder competed in the 1,500m and clinched the silver medal.

“It was a memorable moment for me because that was the tournament where I set my personal best of 5:14:00.

Savinder has also added the Selangor School Sports Council (MSSS) road race title to her list of achievements.

“I won the event with a time 24:09:00 and that was my last victory in Selangor before moving to Bukit Jalil.
Despite all the talent in middle distance running, she started as a sprinter.

“My strength is my endurance and I thought it would be easier for me to compete in middle distance because short distance is all about speed from start to end,” Savinder said.

Coach Indran says Savinder has the potential to do well beyond school competitions.

“She has already proven she can be a good runner even before she joined us and now we intend to make her even better. She is definitely one to look out for in middle distance running.

IN PREPARATION for the upcoming MSSKL Zone Athletic meets, a few schools in Kuala Lumpur sent their students to compete in the FTKLAA/MSSKL Throws, Jumps and Under-Distance Athletic Meet at the National Sports Council training track in Bukit Jalil recently.

According to Abraham Joseph Raj, who coaches the SMK Sri Pantai athletic team, 17 students took part in the meet.

“We won one silver and two bronze medals. That is a great accomplishment.

“Last year, our school won one gold, two silvers and 16 bronze in the MSSKL athletic meet for Bangsar Zone.

“This created history for the school even though we do not have a field for athletics training. I usually enter the students for road races and even train running outside the school.

“We are looking forward to do even better in the upcoming Bangsar Zone MSSKL Athletic Meet to be held at Sri Permaisuri mini stadium in Bandar Sri Permaisuri from March 4 to 7,’’ he said.

Sri Garden School retired teacher S. Arunandy, who is a qualified athletics coach, brought 42 students — the second biggest group at the meet.

Arunandy said the competition was aimed at preparing his students for the upcoming MSSKL Athletic meet.
“I hope they will perform well after gaining experience here.

“Although this meet is held during the Chinese New Year holidays, the students were looking forward to competing as it is the first competitive meet in the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA) calendar,’’ he said.

Besides these two schools, Bukit Jalil Sports Schools (BJSS) sent 71 students while Bandar Penawar Sports School had 33 students, followed by SMK Seri Sentosa (33), Police (22), Ground Forces (21), Malacca (20), Alice Smith School (19), Kluang Sports School in Johor (18), Rakan Muda (15) and Paralympic Team (14).

FTKLAA vice-president N.T. Balan said he was pleasantly surprised by the encouraging turnout at the meet despite it being the holiday season.

“There were 290 boys and 222 girls taking part in the championship,’’ he said.

“When a participant manages to run the 60m event with a good timing, it will boost his morale, especially in the case of the younger athletes.

“They will find that they can go even further and start training seriously and eventually compete in normal athletics meets.

“It is all about development. And FTKLAA is very keen in seeing that junior athletes are groomed and have an avenue to compete,’’ added Balan.

Events held at the meet were shot putt, discus, high jump, triple jump, javelin, 3km walk, 5km walk, 2km hurdles, 3km hurdles, 60m, 150m, 300m, 600m, 1,200m, 3,000m — for both men and women.

Irfan knows his target

By DEVINDER SINGH | devinder@nst.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: IRFAN Shamshuddin may only be 18 but the javelin thrower has already set his sights on making it to the Myanmar Sea Games in December.

The 2012 Malaysia Games gold medalist is not far off the qualification mark and believes he needs just a few more months to book his ticket to Naypyidaw.

His best of 44.97m, registered at last year's Malaysian Open, is over five metres shy of the 50.56m mark Irfan must meet to qualify for the Sea Games.

In his first competition this year, Irfan threw the javelin to a distance of 42.21m at the Kuala Lumpur Throws, Jumps and Under-distance meet at the National Sports Complex mini stadium recently.

"I can't be satisfied with that but for this early in the season, it's not too bad," said Irfan, from Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

"I just recovered from fever a few days ago so I'm not at my best yet. I'm sure by the middle of the year, I will be near my peak.

"I think I will be able to qualify for the Sea Games then and I'll be training as hard as I can to make it. If I can throw above 48 metres, I hope they will consider me for the Sea Games."

Another youngster aiming to qualify for the Sea Games is Malaysian schools long jump and triple jump champion Noor Shahidatun Nadia Zuki.

Nadia, 16, leapt 5.98m in her pet event, the long jump, but must clear 6.47m to qualify automatically for the Sea Games.

"I will be focusing on the long jump as this is my favourite event. I think I have a good chance if I can improve on my personal best (6.11)," said Nadia, who came to prominence when she gold at the Asean Schools Games as a 14-year-old.

There were no outstanding performances at the one-day meet with most athletes taking the opportunity to limber up for bigger competitions ahead.

In the track events, a large number withdrew from the finals in the evening after taking part in the morning's heats with only two athletes bothering to turn up in each of the men's and women's 300m finals.
