Shahidatul and Kirthana book tickets to world junior meet

By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Triple jumpers Noor Shahidatul Nadia and R. Kirthana qualified for the World Youth Athletics Championships in Ukraine after surpassing the qualifying mark in the FTAAA All-Comers meet at the National Sports Council training track in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Shahidatul cleared 12.81m for the gold while Kirthana bagged the silver with her 12.58 effort. Both the Bukit Jalil Sports School students beat the qualifying mark of 12.30.

The 17-year-old Shahidatul has also qualified for the long jump in the Under-17 World Youth Championships from July 10-14 after clearing 5.98m in the National Under and Over distance meet in Bukit Jalil last month. The qualifying mark is 5.90m.

Shahidatul also qualified for the championships in Barcelona last year but was forced to give it a skip as the dates of the meet clashed with the Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Kuantan.

“She sacrificed going to the World Youth Championships because her state Kedah wanted her to focus on Sukma. This time, she will definitely be going to Ukraine,” said BJSS coach Zainal Abas.

Kirthana, a Form Four student, was surprised to qualify for the World Youth Championships.

“I competed in the triple jump for the first time in the National Under and Over distance meet last month and managed to clear 11.99m. And I never expected to improve my mark in just one month,” said Kirthana.

“I am happy with my efforts. From now on, I will focus on the triple jump and hope to do well in Ukraine.”
