UP AND COMING middle distance runner Savinder Kaur is hopeful that she will improve by leaps and bounds now that she is enrolled at Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

The 16-year-old former student of SMK Ideal Heights was spotted by BJSS scouts after she won the 800m with a time of 2:25:00 at the National Schools Sports Council championships (MSSM) in the Under-15 category.

“BJSS coaches A. Trapadi and S. Indran saw my performance in the MSSM where I won gold (800m) and silver (1,500m) and soon after I received the offer to join the school.

“This is my third month in the BJSS and I’m enjoying the training here because they are so many talented runners and the coaches are also very encouraging.

She added during her time in SMK Ideal Heights, she could only train for one session – in the afternoon as school started early.

“I would normally train alone which could be quite boring sometimes.

“Here in BJSS, we have two sessions and it enables us to maintain our progress as we know that we have to do better in the afternoon training than what we do in the morning,” Savinder said.

She continued her impressive form  at FTAAA MSSKL Throws, Jumps and Under Distance competition last month where she won the women’s 1,200m with a time of 4:01:26.

She also took part in the Little Athletics Championship in Singapore last year July where athletes from the home country, Malaysia and Australia competed.

Savinder competed in the 1,500m and clinched the silver medal.

“It was a memorable moment for me because that was the tournament where I set my personal best of 5:14:00.

Savinder has also added the Selangor School Sports Council (MSSS) road race title to her list of achievements.

“I won the event with a time 24:09:00 and that was my last victory in Selangor before moving to Bukit Jalil.
Despite all the talent in middle distance running, she started as a sprinter.

“My strength is my endurance and I thought it would be easier for me to compete in middle distance because short distance is all about speed from start to end,” Savinder said.

Coach Indran says Savinder has the potential to do well beyond school competitions.

“She has already proven she can be a good runner even before she joined us and now we intend to make her even better. She is definitely one to look out for in middle distance running.
