ATHLETICS: Savinder overcomes pain barrier

STRONG WILLPOWER: Wins Under-18 800m gold despite ankle and back troubles

TWO days after storming to a record-breaking win in the 800m, Selangor's Savinder Kaur endured ankle and back pains to complete a personal double with gold in the Malaysian Schools Athletics Championships girls' Under-18 1,500m final in Kuantan yesterday.

Savinder sped around the rain-drenched track of the Darulmakmur Stadium by shaving 12 seconds off her personal best in a time of 4:55.79s, but she did not get the meet record this time.

Her win, though, was the third-leg of a sweep by Selangor runners of all four 1,500m finals yesterday.
"After the 800m final, I hurt my back and before that race I was carrying an ankle injury," said Selayang girl Savinder. "I sped to win the 800m and that's how I hurt my back.

"But my coach said I could do it again and I did not want to pull out of the 1,500m. I'm happy to have won but if I had broken this record as well I would have been in the running for the overall (best sportsgirl) award."

Savinder, 16, now enrolled in Bukit Jalil Sports School after transferring from SMK Ideal Heights, improved her haul of one gold and one silver in the Under-15 category last year.

Amirul Hakim Johari (boys' Under-18), Asif Rahman Jiyaudeen (boys' Under-15) and A. Manissha (girls' Under-15) completed a memorable outing for Selangor's middle distance runners with victories in their respective events.

J. Pavithraa Devi also had reason to rejoice after turning the tables on Sarawak throws prodigy Grace Wong Xiu Mei to win the Under-15 shot put.

Penang's Pavithraa, who also won the javelin on Sunday, was edged to the discus gold by Grace, who won with her last throw on Monday.

But Pavithraa had the last laugh when she hurled the shot put to 10.73m with her last effort to move from fourth to first and beat Grace by just one centimetre.

"I was in fourth place and I was just thinking I would give it my best and try to win after what happened yesterday (Monday) when she (Grace) overtook me. I'm happy I won two gold," said Pavithraa, the sole gold medallist for Penang.

Kuala Lumpur's Malaysia Games double gold medalist won the girls' Under-18 5,000m walk by breaking her own record in 25:46.13 for the first of five new marks yesterday.

Sarawak's Queenie Ting Kun Ni won the girls' Under-18 discus with a throw of 40.78m to obliterate Sarawakian Phang Hua Mei's 2006 record of 38.75m.

Mahira Hanis Ishak of Johor bagged the girls' Under-12 long jump record with a 5.06m effort to erase the 4.91m standard of Johor's Cheah Yean Yean from 2004.

Kedah's Noor Shahidatun Nadia Zuki added the girls' Under-18 long jump gold, with a 5,83m effort, to her earlier win in the triple jump and complete the double for a third year running.

Malacca claimed the boys' Under-15 4x100m gold in a new record of 43.17 seconds to erase the old mark of 43.20 held jointly by Sarawak (2010) and Perak (2012).

Perak's R. Kirthana, with three silver medals to her name, finally won gold when she led Perak to victory in the girls' Under-18 4x100m final in a new record of 48.29 seconds, eclipsing Johor's 2010 mark of 48.53.
Azam Masri collected his third gold medal after wins in the 100m and 400m when Malacca won the boys' Under-18 4x100m final in 41.94 seconds.
