Kedah lass’ dual mission at MSSM meet
NOOR SHAHIDATUN NADIA MOHD ZUKI, 17 on June 5, of the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) will attempt to rewrite the national schools’ (MSSM) triple jump and long jump records at this year’s 55th annual track & field championships in Kuantan from May 19-24.
Shahidatun Nadia who hails from Kubang Rotan in Alor Star has her eyes on a double record feat by posting new marks in both events in this year’s meet. She almost had them last year when the meet was held in Kangar, Perlis where she broke the triple jump record with a 12.36m effort and equalled the long jump record of 5.85m held by Tengku Moliana Tengku Zainal Abidin of Kelantan since 2006.
She broke the long standing triple jump record of 12.24m held by Sabah’s Mary Nakaran since 2003.
Her confidence has been boosted after winning both the triple and long jump gold medals at the recent ASEAN games in Surabaya, Indonesia. She won the long jump gold with a personal best of 6.03m and the triple jump clearing 12.70m.
Her personal best in the triple jump is 12.99m, which she did at the FT All-Comers meet in March 2012 and coupled with the 6.03m effort in the long jump at the ASEAN schools meet, all signs point to a gratifying outing for her at this year’s MSSM championships.
The easy-going lass with a captivating smile is not only aiming for both MSSM records but at the same time hopes to become only the third Malaysian female athlete to clear the magical 13 meters mark in the triple jump.
Only two Malaysians have cleared 13 meters in the triple jump. They are Selangor’s Ngew Sin Mei (13.74m) and Noor Amira Mohd Nafiah of Perak (13.37m).
She said, “I have been working hard to improve my jumping techniques since taking up both events five years ago I do not expect to face undue competition in both events and barring injury or any untoward happenings I hope to accomplish my mission.
“My life-long ambition is to represent the country in the Olympic games one day and I hope this year’s MSSM meet will be the stepping stone to achieve my dream,” added the 2012 Kedah sports girl of the year award winner.
