KANGAR: High jumper M. Shandyiani completed a hat-trick in the National Schools Athletics Championships (MSSM) in style with a new meet record at Stadium Utama here yesterday.
The lanky lass cleared 1.72m to erase Johorean Wong Boon Syian’s mark of 1.71m set in 2004. The win yesterday allowed Shandyiani to complete her dominance in the Under-18 event, which she also won in 2010 and 2011.
The Petaling Jaya girl had no problems brushing aside the challenges of Federal Territories’ Yap Sean Yee and Kedah’s Puteri Nur Liyana Megat Abd Hajat, who both finished second with an identical 1.67m on countback.
Shandyiani, however, failed in her attempt to clear 1.75m.
“I had a good day as I achieved my target of breaking the record here despite the tough fight from the other girls,” said the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) pre-university student.
“I cleared 1.72m last year, so that was why I tried to go higher. I wanted to clear 1.80m, which is the World Junior Championships (WJC) qualification mark.
“I’m quite happy with my performance as I have only eight more centimetres to beat to compete in the world juniors ... it would have been perfect if I had done it here.”
The 18-year-old’s next assignment will be the Asian junior meet in Sri Lanka and Asean School Games in Jakarta in June.
“I’ll now focus on making my mark at the world juniors in Barcelona from July 10-15. I’ll prepare for it by competing in two of the major events in Sri Lanka and Jakarta,” she said.
