MISTAKE: Jury annuls Under-18 100m final result after false start fiasco

A technical error on Wednesday led to protest by Pahang against the winner Hakim Faizi Rosli of Negri Sembilan, who they alleged should have been disqualified for a false start.NOOR Shahidatun Nadia Zuki completed a jumps double in setting her second meet record in Kangar yesterday but the Malaysian Schools Athletics Championships was hit with controversy after the result of the boys' Under-18 100 metres final was annulled.

The meet's jury acknowledged the mistake but chose not to disqualify Hakim and award the gold medal to Amirul Mukmin Yusmiza.

Instead, they decided to hold a re-run of the race this morning with all eight finalists after obtaining the agreement of everyone involved.

"In the interest of the athletes, the jury decided to run the race again," said jury member and Perlis AAA honorary secretary M. Iyaru yesterday.

"As this is not the fault of the athlete and was a result of a technical mistake, it would not be fair to exclude anyone.

"All the team managers agreed to the re-run with all the eight finalists."

While that was being debated, Nadia continued her dominance of the jumps by adding the girls' Under-18 long jump gold to her win in the triple jump on Tuesday.

Nadia equalled Tengku Monoliana Engku Hashim's 2006 record of 5.85m to leave 100m winner Stefbilce Sandy Stephen of Sabah in second place on 5.40.

"When the Sabah girl (Stefbilce) jumped 5.40m at the first attempt that had me worried a bit as I only did 5.53.

"I equalled the record with the next jump but I'm disappointed not to have got the record for myself.

"I don't quite know what went wrong. Maybe it was the wind which kept changing direction as I was about to jump," said Nadia, who fouled out on her last two attempts to ruin her chances of improving on her personal best of 6.11m.

As soon as Nadia finished, heavy rain left the Utama Stadium track drenched which delayed the running of the six 4x100m finals by an hour before Sabah took three of the relay gold medals.

Perak edged Negri Sembilan to the boys' under-18 4x100m gold on a photo-finish after both quartets ended on 42.52 seconds while Perak's boys' under-15 team matched Sarawak's record of 43.20 in winning the event.
