ON TRACK: Big guns Sarawak claim six gold
DEFENDING overall champions Sarawak flexed their muscles again by claiming six gold medals as four meet records were broken on the opening day of the Malaysian Schools Athletics Championships at the Utama Stadium in Kangar yesterday.
Terengganu won the two main events of the day in the boys' and girls' Under-18 400m finals for their only gold medals yesterday while Perak's Mior Amerul Sahak bagged the first gold medal of the meet by winning the boys' Under-18 5,000m walk in 24:34.0s.
Ikhwan Safwan Zainudin stormed to the boys' Under-18 400m win in a personal best of 49.24 seconds after holding off the challenge of Kedah's K. Dinesh at the line.
"It's the first time I have won at this meet after just getting a silver at the Under-15 level two years ago.
"I've worked to prepare for this event and I was confident I would win before the start," said Dungun-born Ikhwan, 17, who improved on his previous best by 0.54s.
Teammate Layalia Rameli earlier won Terengganu's first gold in the girls' Under-18 400m in 57.60s after just nudging Fathin Faqihah Yusuf of Sabah by 0.04s.
"I knew it would be close. I was keeping an eye out for the Sabah girl (Fathin) and I'm glad I won.
"I had only hoped to do my best as this race was difficult to predict," said Layalia, who also won this event at the Under-15 level in 2010.
The first record of the day was broken by Kedah's Noor Shahidatun Nadia Zuki in the girls' Under-15 triple jump with a 12.36m jump.
This was followed by Perak's Fatini Husna Yusop in the girls' 80m hurdles heats when she clocked 12.71s to erase the 12.87 time posted by teammate Nor Hazwani Abd Haris last year.
But there was heartbreak for Fatini later in the evening when she was reduced to tears after only finishing second in 13.38s to Sabah's Aziee Fazlia Francis (13.32).
Aminuddin Ajmain of Johor shattered the boys' Under-15 discus by a staggering 5.40m after heaving the disc to 54.40m, erasing a 15-year-old record held by Sarawak's Goh Ing Kui.
Not to be outdone, Perak's Cheah Yau Chung ran a blistering boys' Under-15 400m final under the blazing sun only to collapse after crossing the finish line in 56.06 seconds.
When he came around to, he found out that his time had beaten Ku Amir Syazwan Ku Shariff's record of 50.27 set last year.
The Sarawak gold medalists were Fazillah Khamis (boys' Under-18 110m hurdles), Billy Edward (boys' Under-18 discus), Rizzua Haizad Muhamad (boys' Under-15 110m hurdles), Samuel Ling (boys' Under-12 shot put), Norris Foo (girls' Under-15 100m hurdles) and Erlyisiana Jhatty (girls' Under-15 high jump).
