Singapore School Confirms Entry In Championships

In charge: BJSS athletics coach Ithnin is organising the championships with Entheran (below).
THE Singapore Sports School has confirmed their participation in the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) combined events athletics championships at the National Sports Council (NSC) training centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 21 and 22.
Six local schools — BJSS, Bandar Penawar Sports School, Tun Hussein Onn Sports School (Johor), SMK Putra (Kelantan), SMK Mutiara Impian (Penang) and Gunung Rapat Sports School (Perak) — have also confirmed their participation in the championships.
Two schools from Australia were invited but they declined. However, they have indicated their interest to be part of the competition next year.
The championships, catering for Form One students, is organised by the BJSS Track and Field Club. Coaches S. Entheran and Ithnin Mahadi have been given the responsibility to organise the two-day event.
Entheran said the competition was a combined events championships and the events are 100m, 80m hurdles, 800m, long jump, high jump and shot putt.
“The aim of the competition is to give the young athletes the opportunity to develop their essential motor abilities — running, jumping and throwing.
“The students from the participating schools are all involved in a systematic training programme but they don’t have the chance to take part in competitions.
“Now, we have created this competition for the respective coaches to evaluate the students’ progress,’’ he said.
Each team will comprise 10 athletes — five boys and five girls — and all must be born in 1997. There will be medals for the top 10 in the individual categories for both boys and girls.
For the team category, prizes will be awarded to the top three. The prizes are sponsored by Milo.
Another exciting event will be the medley relay (100m, 200m, 300m and 400m) among the participating teams. BJSS principal Marina Chin has sponsored the challenge trophy for the champions of the medley relay.
